Registered successful candidates will achieve a Prince’s Trust Level 4 Diploma in Counselling Skills and Theory (RQF) 603/6872/X.

Our unique psychotherapeutic counselling training uses a core model based on exploring the client’s past, present and future, then learning different techniques and skills which will help them heal, resolve their issues and achieve their goals.

Choose this course if you want to make great progress towards becoming a counsellor and be recognised for your therapeutic skills.

If you already have a counselling qualification at Level 3 or equivalent, you can start this course in the second year.

Syllabus

Year One: 10 Classes as per Chrysalis Diploma in Hypnotherapy & Introducing Counselling Skills. Year Two: Over 10 classes, you'll study the following seven components:

  • Foundations of Counselling and Theory Part 1: The Psychodynamic Approach You will explore, on this course, a contemporary framework known as the Pluralistic approach which incorporates different main theories and approaches. The first main approach within this framework is Psychodynamic counselling and you will learn the historic and basic principles of this important approach.
  • Foundations of Counselling and Theory Part 2: The Humanistic Approach The Humanistic approach is a key therapy approach within which sits Person Centred Counselling. The importance of the therapeutic relationship and using the Core Conditions are both explored and practised.
  • Foundations of Counselling and Theory Part 3: The Cognitive Behavioural Approach CBT is widely used and has principles and techniques which can inform a contemporary approach to assisting clients. You will explore the theory and methods of this approach and learn how to bring structure to sessions integrating basic counselling skills.
  • Stress, Anxiety & Self-Defeating Behaviours You will further explore and understand how to establish and maintain a professional boundaried supportive relationship and to provide an environment to ethically support those who are experiencing some common presenting issues.
  • Relationships, Bereavement And Loss You examine how important relationships are in individual development and wellbeing, and you will be introduced to theories of attachment and loss and how to support bereaved clients.
  • Development, Motivation And Goal Achievement You explore methods of working with issues of low motivation, frustration and anger, with deeper reflection on cultural and social differences while building on therapeutic skills.
  • Understanding Evidence Based Counselling Practice You will learn about different types of research studies used to provide evidence for approaches, methods and treatment protocols, with focus on evaluating quantitative and qualitative therapy studies and what we can learn from them.
